BOOK LIST (to print) -- RUSSIA
PODCASTS:
On the Russia side, for your little ones, the animated version of Anastasia is very well done.  Your older ones may be interested in the older classic of Anastasia starring Ingrid Bergman as well as Nicholas and Alexandra which introduces the tragic story of the Romanovs.  It may lead to a little research on why people thought Anastasia may have survived and what recent findings have revealed.

For your younger children there is Our Little Russian Cousin. For your children 9 and over, I recommend checking out the book Katrinka, a story of a young girl in pre-Revolutionary Russia.  Also, the story of Mary Antin, a 12 year old Russian Jewish girl,  is engaging.  The story of Mary Antin inspired a  recent illustrated version, Streets of Gold suitable for 5 and up, and it may be in your public library.  If your family has never watched Fiddler on the Roof, this may be a good month to show it to help bring awareness to the plight of Russian Jewish refugees.

Here is the book I chose to go in this month's World History volume on The Story of Russia.  Your middle and high schoolers may like it,  but if you don't have any older kids, I suggest reading it yourself.  It's a story I certainly wasn't familiar with and it has a lot of lessons for us.

Florence Nightingale can be tied into this month's study for her work in the Crimean War.  This Messner biography is a good choice as well as Laura Richard's version for young people.

Don't forget to check out Enrichment for music options, crafts, food and other activities.
