This month is for celebrating the birth of America and her hard-won freedom! As difficult as the events leading up to this moment have been, the most dangerous time still lies ahead. Birthing a new nation is not for the faint hearted. This was a time of miracles, not the least of which was a 32-page document that has bound us together for over 200 years.
Help your young ones learn our nation's songs. You'll find many of them on the Enrichment page and throughout Month 6 My America Story Book.. Allow them to surround themselves with the red, white, and blue and feel of the values and virtues they represent. There are red, white, and blue crafts galore in the Enrichment section.
BOOK SUGGESTIONS:
The Century Book for Young Americans by Elbridge Brooks
Your elementary-aged children will enjoy an imaginary trip through Washington DC with four young people and their uncle as he explains the buildings, symbols, and workings of our government. This book is included in Stories of the Government, but the book we publish adds updated information. I learned so much on this little 'tour.' For instance, imagine the grief we could have saved ourselves if we still followed the rule that says a bill must be read aloud 3 times before it can be voted on. Now we have bills with thousands of pages that no one reads until they're passed into law. Not so wise.
Take a look at this book to read aloud with your Middle Schoolers:
The Story of Our Constitution by Eva March Tappan
They will come away with a keener insight into the forces working against the Constitution and will have a greater appreciation for what emerged from the conflicts.
I recommend the next two books for your High Schoolers and for you.
The Story of Liberty by Charles Coffin
A love of our Constitution cannot be held without an understanding of how rare a prize liberty is. On the cover of my copy are the words: "So you will comprehend what liberty has cost,...and what it is worth." Charles Coffin follows the fight for liberty over the centuries leading up to the landing of the Pilgrims. You'll see tyranny up close and personal. And it's not pretty at all. Younger children will be able to comprehend the story, but it's filled with a lot of harsh realities of history that younger children's sensitivities may not be ready for. Use your discretion.
The Discovery of Freedom by Rose Wilder Lane
Written in 1943
Rose Wilder Lane, the daughter of Little House author, Laura Ingalls Wilder, supported the idea of Communism until she got a first-hand look at it in the countries under its rule. She returned to America as an ardent fighter for freedom. You'll find many thought-provoking ideas in this little book that will cause you, perhaps, to look at freedom through new eyes. I highly recommend it.
