CLASSIC LITERATURE
► ♥ A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
♦ $ Cyrano retold by Geraldine McCaughrean
Cyrano de Bergerac has panache, a fact that is evidenced both by the ever-present white plume in his hat and by his swagger. He is a man of action, a soldier, a man of letters, and a hopeless romantic. The one flaw is his enormous nose. Cyrano is hopelessly in love with his cousin Roxane; however, her heart belongs to another. Through intrigue and subterfuge, he is able to express his feelings toward her by words and letters. The story has something for everyone–action, adventure, and romance. The dynamically drawn characters jump off the page. Staying true to Edmond Rostand's original tale, McCaughrean introduces a new generation to the swashbuckling hero. This is an easy read and should be considered as a first purchase.
♥ Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
♥ Man in the Iron Mask by Alexander Dumas
► ♥ Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc by Mark Twain
► ♥ The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy

♥ French Pictures and Their Painters by Lorinda Bryant
♦ The Seine, River of Paris by Hazel Wilson
♥ The Story of Roland by James Baldwin (1911)
“I have culled the story from the song-writers and poets of five centuries and of as many languages.” James Baldwin is a master storyteller and I would have listed this book in Middle School except for the size of the book. I wouldn't hesitate introducing it to a younger child if there's an interest in the complete story of Roland.

HISTORICAL FICTION
♦ Judith of France by Margaret Leighton
" It is the moving and exciting story of Judith of France, granddaughter of Charlemagne, teenage bride of old King Ethelwulf of the Anglo-Saxons, boyhood friend of Alfred the Great of England, and eventually the lover and wife of the dashing Baudoin Bras-de-Fer, first Count of Flanders. In its pages, Ninth-Century Europe comes alive in its lively pageantry and stark harshness, and becomes fleshed out in the persons of its vividly-drawn characters."
♥ Peasant and Prince by Harriet Martineau
You'll find an interesting account of Harriet Martineau's life in the Preface that will greatly add to the appeal of the book. This is a fictionalized story of the French Revolution.
